Peter has been leading professional development workshops for
teachers since 1986. He founded Murphy Writing of Stockton University to share his successful teaching strategies more widely. Here are
some highlights of his qualifications and honors:
- Twice named a Distinguished Teacher by the White House
Commission on Presidential Scholars
- A Master Teacher for the New Jersey Council for the
Humanities Summer Institute since 1999, Poetry consultant to
The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation since 1986 and advisor to
numerous other arts and educational institutions
- Teacher of high school English,
creative writing and
humanities for 29 years, part time college writing
instructor since 1982
- Recipient of fellowships from The Folger Shakespeare
Library, The National Endowment for the Humanities, The New
Jersey State Council on the Arts, the Corporation of Yaddo,
the Atlantic Center for the Arts and The Virginia Center for
the Creative Arts
- Author of eleven books and chapbooks including The Man Who Never Was, Mean Time and two books of writing prompts.
- Founder of the
Winter Poetry & Prose Getaway, an annual
conference for teachers, writers and artists, established in
1994
- Longtime reader & rater for Educational Testing Service
- M.A. in English Education from New York University where
he wrote his thesis on teaching writing to high school
students
Stephanie Cawley

Stephanie is a writer, educator and arts administrator from southern New Jersey. She holds an M.F.A. in Poetry from the University of Pittsburgh and a B.A. in Literature from Stockton University. For 10 years, Stephanie has taught creative writing in both community and academic settings and has worked in nonprofit and arts administration. Her writing has been featured in Verse Daily, Best New Poets and the PEN Poetry Series. She is the author of the chapbook A Wilderness, winner of the 2018 All-Genre Chapbook Contest from Gazing Grain, an inclusive feminist press. Her first full-length collection of poetry Animal Mineral is forthcoming from YesYes Books.
